Fungal vs. Bacterial: How to Tell Them Apart

This is the fork that decides your treatment, and you can usually call it by eye.

Fungal leaf spots are typically round with a defined border, and many show concentric rings (a "bullseye" or target pattern). Look closely — often with a hand lens — and you'll see tiny dark specks in the spot: these are the fungus's fruiting bodies (pycnidia), and they're a giveaway. Fungi spread by spores that ride splashing water, wind, and dirty tools, so fungal spots surge after humid, wet weeks.

Bacterial leaf spots look wetter and more irregular. The University of Minnesota describes bacterial angular leaf spot as "small, angular, brown or straw-colored spots with a yellow halo," with the spots typically confined within leaf veins — which is why they look angular rather than round. In humid conditions a drop of clear-to-white bacterial ooze can form on the spot, and later the dead centers dry and drop out, leaving ragged holes. Crucially, bacterial spots never have fruiting bodies. So: round, ringed, or speckled with fruiting bodies points fungal; angular, water-soaked, vein-bounded, and haloed points bacterial.

Septoria is the classic tomato leaf spot: the University of Maryland Extension says it starts on the lower leaves as small circular gray lesions with dark borders when the first fruit begins to form, then enlarges and coalesces until the leaves yellow and die. How to Treat Leaf Spot

Treatment splits along the fungal/bacterial line.

Fungal leaf spots. Remove and destroy infected leaves as soon as you spot them — the University of Maryland recommends pulling affected foliage during the growing season and pruning off the lowest leaf branches on tomatoes to cut soil-splash reinfection. Water at the base and avoid wetting the leaves, mulch to stop soil from splashing spores upward, and space plants for airflow. Bacterial leaf spots. There's no cure once bacteria are established, so this is management, not eradication. Remove infected tissue, and don't work among the plants when the leaves are wet — the University of Minnesota notes the bacteria move on hands, tools, insects, and splashing water. Copper "can slow the spread of disease if used early," but UMN is explicit that sprays are not effective once disease is severe. For badly infected plants, the right move is often removal.

Houseplant leaf spots. Isolate the plant, remove spotted leaves, cut back on misting and leaf-wetting, and improve air circulation. Neem oil handles mild fungal cases; persistent water-soaked spots that ooze mean bacterial, and the plant may not be worth keeping near your others.

Preventing Leaf Spot

Almost every leaf spot needs one thing to spread: wet leaves. Take that away and you prevent most infections.

  • Water at the base, never overhead. Drip irrigation or a watering can at soil level keeps foliage dry; overhead sprinklers and evening watering are exactly what these pathogens want.
  • Mulch. A layer of mulch stops rain and irrigation from splashing spores and bacteria up onto the lowest leaves.
  • Space for airflow. Crowded plants stay wet longer. Give them room and prune dense growth so leaves dry quickly.
  • Clean up debris. Many pathogens overwinter in fallen leaves — the UMN notes bacterial angular leaf spot can survive in plant debris for over two years — so remove and destroy infected material rather than composting it cold.
  • Rotate crops and sterilize tools. In the vegetable garden, rotate away from the same plant family for a few years, and wipe pruners between plants so you're not carrying the infection.
  • Start clean. Choose resistant varieties where they exist and disease-free seed and transplants.

When Leaf Spot Is Serious — and Where to Go Next

A few spots on an otherwise healthy plant rarely kill it; the danger is spread.
