How to Get Rid of Lace Bugs (Quick Answer)

What Are Lace Bugs?

That's why the damage looks so different from a caterpillar's chewing or a beetle's holes. Instead of missing tissue, you get a leaf that's slowly drained of color from below.
The most common landscape species is the azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides), and it's the one that causes the most grief. Unlike the rhododendron lace bug, which has a single generation a year, the azalea lace bug runs through two to four overlapping generations per season across much of the country โ which is exactly why one spray in spring never seems to finish the job.
How to Identify Lace Bug Damage (Flip the Leaf)
From the top, lace bug damage looks like fine stippling โ a scatter of tiny white or pale-yellow dots where cells have been emptied. As feeding continues, the dots merge and the whole leaf takes on a bleached, grayish, or silvery cast. Heavily fed leaves eventually yellow and drop.
Here's the detail that matters: that bleaching is permanent. Chlorophyll doesn't come back to those cells, so a leaf that's silvered in July stays silvered until it falls. Judging severity by counting bleached leaves overestimates the current infestation, because you're also looking at old damage. What tells you the bugs are active right now is the underside.
Turn a damaged leaf over and look for three things: the insects themselves (flat adults or spiny nymphs), shiny dark-brown to black varnish-like spots of frass, and pale cast skins left behind when nymphs molt. Lace Bugs vs. Spider Mites vs. Thrips
All three of these pests bleach or stipple foliage from the underside, and people misdiagnose them constantly โ which wastes money, because the treatments overlap but the timing and coverage don't. Use the underside to tell them apart.

How to Treat Lace Bugs by Severity
Match the effort to the infestation. Blasting a lightly stippled shrub with a systemic is overkill; hand-spraying a badly bleached hedge won't keep up.
Mild (a few stippled leaves, bugs present on undersides): Knock nymphs off with a hard spray of water, then coat the leaf undersides with insecticidal soap or a summer-rate horticultural oil. These are contact-only, so coverage is everything โ the bugs live on the bottom of the leaf, and that's where the spray has to land. Repeat every 7โ10 days for two to three applications to catch nymphs as they hatch.
Moderate (widespread stippling, multiple leaves bleaching): Step up to neem oil, which both kills on contact and disrupts feeding and molting, or stay with oil/soap but tighten the interval. Target the nymphs of each generation โ they're softer and easier to kill than adults. In much of the country the first big nymph flush is late spring; a second and third follow through summer.
Severe (leaves broadly silvered, repeated reinfestation): A soil drench of a systemic neonicotinoid โ imidacloprid or dinotefuran โ is absorbed by the roots and gives season-long control without spraying undersides at all. Mississippi State and Clemson both list these as effective soil treatments. Two hard rules: apply it to shrubs that are not in bloom, because the compound moves into pollen and harms bees, and follow the label rate exactly. Prevention: Why Shade Beats Spray
The most durable lace bug control is where you plant, not what you spray. Azaleas evolved as understory shrubs, and the ones baking in full afternoon sun are the ones that get hammered.
There are two reasons, and the second is the one most guides miss. The obvious one is stress: sun-stressed azaleas secrete compounds that lace bugs can detect, so the weakened plants are easier to find and better to feed on. The less obvious one is predation.
